WORCESTER – Sophomore Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) struck out eight and freshman Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) connected on a three-run homer in game one while senior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) and sophomore Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) each homered in game two as the WPI softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 5-2 and 9-5 victory over visiting Clark Friday on Rooftop Field.
The Engineers improve to 18-6 and 8-0 in NEWMAC contests while the Cougars move to 8-12 and 2-6.
Sophomore Skylar O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA) reached on an error and sophomore Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) singled down the left field line to setup the three-run swing by Ambrosino in the third. Senior Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) added two more with an RBI double to right center in the fifth.
Clark sophomore JC Urella (North Grafton, MA) and freshman Francesca Cirone (Franklin Square, NY) put the Cougars on the board with back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the top of the seventh before a strikeout looking ended the game.
Junior Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) walked twice and stole three bases for WPI. Martin did not allow a run on three hits and two walks in five innings of work while Kuberka fanned three in relief.
The Cougars scored first in the nightcap as Urella sent a run-producing single to center. After sophomore Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) tripled, Wood reclaimed the lead for the Engineers with a blast to right center. An unearned run then made it 3-1 WPI heading into the second.
The Crimson and Gray tacked on three more in the second behind an RBI single by Gonzales and two unearned runs. Each side scored a run in the third as Urella put a productive ground out into play and WPI capitalized on another miscue.
Clark posted a three-run frame in the top of the sixth as freshman Jessica Martin (Winthrop, MA) singled to left and classmate Kaylee Gibson (Northfield, MA) followed with a two-RBI hit three batters later. Kuberka then added a pair of insurance runs with her first career home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Wood was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while Gonzales (triple) and freshman Gabriella Cerbo (Middletown, NJ) each batted 2-for-4 and combined for three RBI. Ambrosino, LeClaire and senior Kylie Juarez (Elk Grove, CA) all doubled as Kuberka delivered four RBI. Junior Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) yielded five runs on six hits and two walks and struck out five in the win. Freshman Abigail O'Connor (Belle Mead, NJ) allowed one hit and walked a pair, and struck out two, in the final two innings.
Urella finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Freshman Devan Galli (North Adams, MA) doubled and senior Kendra Walker (Cumberland, RI) was credited with a pair of sacrifice bunts. Junior Sarah Woods (Littleton, MA), and sophomores Alexis Redish (Howell, NJ) and Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, RI) all went at least an inning in the circle for Clark.
WPI hosts Babson and Clark heads to No. 16 MIT tomorrow. Both NEWMAC twinbills get underway at noon.
