Wood Walk-Off Gives Softball Doubleheader Split Versus Babson

Caraline Wood

WORCESTER -- Senior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) hit a walk-off single in the opening game of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Babson at Rooftop Field, but the Beavers got WPI back in the second game as the Engineers suffered their first loss of the season in NEWMAC play.

Wood went 5-for-8 across both games to lead the WPI offense, as she and Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) hit solo homers in the first and fourth innings of the opener, and then Wood sent the Engineers to a 4-3 victory.

Babson (11-9, 7-3 NEWMAC) led from the start of the nightcap and held on for a 5-3 win to split the doubleheader as WPI fell to 19-7 and 9-1 in the NEWMAC.

Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) went the distance in the first game, striking out eight and allowing three earned runs as she improved to 11-2 on the season.

Wood gave Phillips an early lead in the bottom of the first, and then Kuberka followed suit in the fourth as both sent their home runs over the center field wall.

The Beavers briefly took the lead in the sixth inning with back-to-back extra base hits. Alex Corrigan (Middletown, NJ) sent a two-run triple down the right field line to drive in Kayla Schinik (Watchung, NJ) and Isabel Aguilar (Avon, CT).

Corrigan then scored herself on the next at bat, as catcher Tori Roche (Andover, MA) doubled to center to give the visitors a short-lived 3-2 advantage.

Kuberka sent a double to center of her own in the bottom of the sixth, and then Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) followed with a double to right to tie it up at 3-3.

Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) singled to lead off the seventh and two batters later Wood found the gap in right center to for a walk-off RBI single.

Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, FL) pitched the complete game for Babson in the opener. Stock also struck out the final two batters to pick up a save in the second game, while Kate Gademsky (Hillsborough, NJ) gave up three runs over 6-1/3 innings to pick up the victory.

Abigail O'Connor(Belle Mead, NJ) came on in relief of starter Katie Martin(Bedford, NH) for WPI, allowing just one run over 5-1/3 innings of work.

Jacqueline Paul (Burlington, NJ) doubled in Josephine Mares (Houston, TX) in the top of the first, and then Paul scored on an error to give Babson a 2-0 lead.

WPI cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning as Ambrosino led off with a single and then scored on a Kuberka fielder's choice to make it 2-1.

In the second inning, Mares drove in Schinik with a base hit up the middle and then scored herself on an Ashley Tango (Reading, MA) triple to center.

The Engineers again got a run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to Ambrosino's base running. The freshman reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and then came around to cut it to 4-2 after an error by the center fielder.

However, the Beavers' bats stayed hot and they followed up by scoring for a third straight inning. Cara Harnick (Sammamish, WA) doubled to left field to drive in Aguilar and push the lead to 5-2 through three innings.

After three scoreless innings, the hosts tried to stage a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but ended up stranding the tying run on base.

Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA), Wood and Kuberka hit consecutive singles with one out, with Kuberka's base hit driving in Gonzales to pull it back to 5-3.

However, Stock got the final two outs to seal the split afternoon.

WPI plays a doubleheader at Coast Guard on Friday, starting at 3pm, while Babson will host a doubleheader against Tufts on Monday.
