Louisville, KY --- Senior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) has been named as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New England first team selection. Sophomore Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) and junior Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) were recognized as second and third team honorees, respectively.
Wood, who was a second team selection a year ago and a third teamer in 2016, batted .465 and ranks third in Division III with 59 RBI and 126 total bases, 10th with 67 hits and 11th with 13 home runs following the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament. The senior also led the NEWMAC with a .875 slugging percentage and four sacrifice flies, and concluded with a seven-game hitting streak, including a 4-for-4 performance versus St. Joseph (CT) in the NCAA tournament. In 18 conference games, Wood led the way with a 1.056 slugging percentage, eight home runs, 29 RBI and 57 total bases.
Gonzales, now a repeat second team member, paced the NEWMAC with 29 hits in conference play. The sophomore was also third overall with 18 stolen bases and was fourth against conference competition with eight. Gonzales had a 12-game hitting streak that concluded versus Wellesley in the NEWMAC tournament. The streak, which started at Coast Guard included six in-a-row with multiple hits in both regular season games versus Smith, Bridgewater State and Wellesley.
Phillips is 17-5 with 116 strikeouts, a 2.74 ERA and a save in 135 1/3 innings this season. The league-leader with nine wins in NEWMAC action was second on the season and ranked fourth in strikeouts overall and in conference games. In addition to a season-high nine strikeouts versus Bridgewater State, Phillips posted eight versus Heidelberg (OH) and in the 4-3 win versus Babson, and did not issue a walk in eight starts.
Earlier this week, Wood and Gonzales were named to the Medford Regional All-Tournament team while the senior was named as a semifinalist for the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III Softball Player of Year award.
