Sylvia and Kent Lead Women's Swimming and Diving in New England Invitational

White River Junction, VT ---  WPI junior Nica Sylvia (Martha's Vineyard, MA) won the three-meter dive as Women's Swimming and Diving co-hosted the New England Invitational along with Keene State. Swimming events were held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center, while the diving was held at Keene State. Middlebury, Assumption, and Post comprised the rest of the field in the non-team scoring meet.

Sylvia tallied 185.32 points to take the three-meter event, just four days after she played midfield for WPI versus Wheaton in the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinals.  Hannah McCallum (Lafayette, CO) finished third in the three-meter (151.43) and second in the one-meter (195.0)  Sylvia was third in one-meter with a score of 176.10.   

Freshman Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) posted the best swimming finish for the Engineers as she placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:16.46. Kent also finished seventh (29.29) in the 50-yard butterfly.

Sophomore Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) swam to a seventh place (30.31) showing in the 50-yard backstroke and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.01. Rookie Kelin Song (Providence, RI) was eighth in the 400-yard individual medley (5:21.39) and in the 1000-yard freestyle (12:11.05).

The 400-yard medley relay team of Peruffo, senior Amanda Blom (Wilkes-Barre, PA), freshman Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) and Kent finished sixth with a 4:27.04 time and eighth (2:04.73) in the 200-yard medley relay. Finishing eighth in the 400-yard medley relay was junior Toni La Bella (Warrick, RI), sophomore Emily Colpas (Holden, MA), freshman Samantha Sargalski (Windsor, CT) and sophomore Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA) with a time of 4:46.31.

Finishing with an eighth place time of 1:51.09 in the 200-yard freestyle relay was Song, junior Jess Shelsky (Nashua, NH), sophomore Lopez and Kent.

Keene paced the field with eight wins, followed by Assumption and Middlebury with four each. Post had one first place finish.

Women's Swimming and Diving hosts Babson next Saturday at 1pm. WPI home meets are held at Clark.
