New London, CT --- WPI's Casey Hayes (Arundel, ME) broke the school record in the three-meter dive and finished second in the one-meter dive as Men's Swimming and Diving fell to the United States Coast Guard Academy 184-108 on Saturday afternoon. With the win Coast Guard improves to 4-0, while WPI drops to 2-1.
Hayes scored a 223.42 in the three-meter win and in the process broke the school record. The previous record was held by Bill Blondin who scored a 221.10 in 1994. Hayes placed second in the one-meter dive with a 211.27.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA), Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA), Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME), and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) finished second with a time of 3:48.26. Three of the four would see success in the individual events.
Lybarger posted second place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.16) and 100-yard freestyle (50.15), while Chiang scored a second place effort in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.72 time. In the 200-yard backstroke, Ruffing swam a second-place 2:02.07.
Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) hit the scoring pad second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.12.
Men's Swimming and Diving hits the pool again when they head to the two-day Wesleyan Invitational on December 4th and 5th.
