Worcester, MA --- The WPI's the women's swimming and diving team placed fourth in the 10th annual Worcester City Championship that ran Friday and Saturday. The meet featured competition from all three NCAA divisions. Division I Holy Cross won (625) as Division II Assumption came in second (393), followed by Division III Clark (337) and WPI (263).
The 400-yard medley relay team of Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI), Amanda Blom (Wilkes-Barre, PA), Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) and Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) started the first session off with a sixth place finish (4:11.50) for the Engineers.
Kent recorded a third place swim with an 18:43.71 in the 1650-yard freestyle. Kelin Song (Providence, RI) notched a ninth place finish (2:27.01) in the 200-yard IM.
Later in the first session, the team of Aubin, Song, Kent and Dinwoodie touched the wall fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.05.
WPI divers Hannah McCallum (Lafayette, CO) and Marissa Goerke (San Diego, CA) placed third (177.45) and fourth (172.89) in the one-meter, respectively.
In the first event on Saturday, the team of Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY), Blom, Aubin and Kent raced to a seventh place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as they posted a 2:03.15.
Colleen Heckley (Tyngsboro, MA) came in eighth in the 400-yard IM (5:27.18), while Kent completed the 200-yard freestyle in seventh place with a time of 2:05.12. Peruffo was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.08) as Blom placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.54). In the 200-yard butterfly Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) was fifth (2:26.76).
Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA) touched the pad sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (27.47), while Aubin was eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (59.07). Dinwoodie captured fifth spot in the 200-yard backstroke (2:18.88) as Blom took home seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:51.37). Aubin was eighth in the 100-yard butterfly as she swam a 1:05.90.
Goerke posted a fourth place 182.24, just ahead of fellow WPI diver McCallum who scored 181.80 in the three-meter. In the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Dinwoodie, Kent, Aubin and Peruffo came in sixth (3:58.16).
Women's Swimming and Diving is back in the pool Thursday when UMass Dartmouth comes to town for a 6:30pm meet at Clark.
