Worcester, MA --- Freshman Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) won two events by more than 10 seconds each and helped a relay team to a victory as WPI women's swimming and diving defeated UMass Dartmouth by a score of 161-132 Thursday evening. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-3, while the Corsairs fall to 2-7.
Kent took the 1,000-yard freestyle by 25 seconds over second place with a time of 11:13.96. The win is her third straight in dual meet competition. In the 200-yard butterfly the freshman recorded a 2:20.26 for first place by a 13 second advantage. Kent teamed with Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA), Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI) and Samantha Sargalski (Windsor, CT) to take the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:48.67.
Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) also touched the pad first in three events as she swept the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:05.28 and 2:20.77. The sophomore also was first in the 200-yard IM as she swam a 2:25.06.
Aubin earned a pair of victories in in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.01) and the 100-yard freestyle (58.02), while the 200-yard breaststroke went to Amanda Blom (Wilkes-Barre, PA) in 2:49.87. Dinwoodie sprinted to a 27.89 win in the 50-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard medley relay Lauren Anderson (Bedford, MA), Blom, Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) and Kelin Song (Providence, RI) took 2:03.49 for the first place finish.
Marissa Goerke (San Diego, CA) scored 200.65 to pace the divers in the three-meter and finished second (197.80), behind Corsair Ceci Rius (Rockville, MD) (206.35) in the one-meter.
UMass Dartmouth took three swimming events on the night. Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.08) as Meredith Maki (Holden, MA) was first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:43.47) and Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA) finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.25).
WPI is back in action Wednesday as they host Clark in a 6:30pm meet. UMass Dartmouth heads to Colby Sawyer next Saturday for a 1pm dual meet.
