Men's Swimming and Diving Edges UMass Dartmouth 150-130

Worcester, MA --- Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA) and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) each won a pair of individual events as the WPI men's swimming and diving team posted a 150-130 win over UMass Dartmouth on Thursday night.  The Engineers move to 4-2, while the Corsairs dip to 2-4.

Lybarger took the 200-yard (1:50.63) and 500-yard (5:08.47) freestyle events for the Crimson and Gray, while the win in the longer race was 25 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The junior also helped two relay teams to victory. The 200-yard medley relay team of James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY), Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA) and Lybarger took 1:43.72 for the win. In the 200-yard freestyle relay Lybarger joined Ben Collins (Newbury, MA), Zach Gendreau (Galesville, WI) and John Lucker (Hamden, CT) as they touched the wall first with a time of 1:37.38.

Chiang won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 22.20 and 49.64, while Perez-Rogers took the 100-yard backstroke with a 59.37. Ruffing added a win for the Crimson and Gray with a 2:00.39 in the 200-yard backstroke and was the runner up in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.20).

The grueling 1,000-yard freestyle went to Carl Curran (Keene, NH) as he posted a 10:45.52.

For the Corsairs, Matt Dean (Londonderry, NH) led the way with three wins. The sophomore grabbed wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.92), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.84) and the 200-yard IM (2:14.73). Joining Dean in the 200-yard IM were Eric Frohman (Woodbridge, CT) and Kevin Janofsky (Brookfield, CT) who took second and third for a sweep in the event.

Craig Johnson (Acushnet, MA) swept the butterflies with a 55.23 in the 100-yard and a 2:13.29 in the 200-yard event. UMass Dartmouth freshman diver Christian Francia (Hampton, NH) scored 224.70 to win the one-meter and 204.80 in the three-meter.

Men's Swimming and Diving is off until Wednesday when they host Clark at 6:30pm. UMass Dartmouth ventures to Colby Sawyer for a 1pm meet next Saturday.
