Middletown, CT --- Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) and Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) each set three individual school records and swam in two record-breaking relay as WPI Women's Swimming and Diving competed Saturday and Sunday at the two-day Wesleyan Invitational. As a team, the Engineers placed third overall in the five-team meet that is their final competition in 2011.
Aubin broke her own school records while winning the 100-yard butterfly (59.99), placing second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.06) and finishing with the second best time in the 50-yard freestyle (25.28). The senior also won the 50-yard butterfly (27.05) and hit the wall fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.99).
Kent broke two records that had stood for 32 years. She won the 400-yard IM (4:40.70) and 200-yard Butterfly 2:14.61 to best Hall of Famer Suzanne Call's marks. The sophomore also set a new school standard with the second overall best time in the 200-yard IM (2:14.16) and won the 500-yard (5:14.07) and 1650-yard (18:06.31) freestyles.
Aubin and Kent also swam legs on a pair of record-breaking relay teams. The duo combined with Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA) and Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI) to set the mark in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2nd - 3:43.16) and Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Dinwoodie in the 800-yard Freestyle Relay (3rd - 8:10.57).
Peruffo came in second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.10), third in the 50-yard butterfly (28.06), fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.75) and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.29). Dinwoodie was second in the 50-yard backdstroke (29.00), second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.14), third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.86) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.15). Lopez had a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.24).
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, January 14th when they travel to Regis to take on the Pride.
