Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Second Consecutive Cardinal Invitational

Middletown, CT --- For the second year in a row, the WPI Men's Swimming and Diving team won the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Wesleyan.  The Engineers registered 1281.5 points finishing nearly 400 points ahead of second place Hamilton in the five-team meet.  

Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA) continued his strong season by winning the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.45. Lybarger then won the 200-yard IM with a 2:00.26 and the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:57.63. James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) was triumphant in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 24.83. The junior also came in second in the 100-yard backstroke with a 54.84 and third in the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:03.04. 

Keith Gagnon (West Hartford, CT) was another winner, with a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.28). The freshman also placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 28.46 and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.79). Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) won the 1650-yard freestyle with a 16:59.83. He was also second in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:55.60 and second in the 400-yard IM with a 4:22.53 finish. 

Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) was second in the 200-yard IM with a 2:01.16, second in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:02.25 and second in the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:59.18. He also placed fifth in the 400 IM at 4:26.03. Ben Collins (Newbury, MA) completed the 50-yard freestyle in second place with a 22.44. Collins had a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.73) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.35). Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle at 17:31.41. He was also third in the 500-yard freestyle, completing the event in 4:58.72. The graduate student also came in fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.39). 

Cullen O'Brien (Ben Harbor, ME) had a third place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke, coming in 0.02 seconds behind Gagnon with a 28.48. O'Brien also placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.73. Ben List (Bedford, MA) was third in the 50-yard butterfly with a 24.38 and ninth in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.02. Carl Curran (Keene, NH) was third in the 400-yard IM, coming in with a time of 4:22.66. His 17:46.61 earned him a third place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle. Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY) had a fourth place finish in the 50-yard butterfly with a 24.67 time. Coffin also came in forth in the 100-yard butterfly (54.19) and fifth in the 200-yard IM (2:04.75). Victor Puksta (Nashua, NH) was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:00.61. 

WPI also won the 400 medley relay, as Perez-Rogers, Gagnon, Lybarger and List put in a time of 3:38.52. 

The team is back in action on Saturday, January 14th when they travel to Regis College to take on the Pride.
