Relays Shine for Men's Swimming and Diving at Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA), Keith Gagnon (West Hartford, CT), Ben Collins (Newbury, MA) and Ben List (Bedford, MA) placed sixth in the 400-yard medley relay event with a time of 3:34.87 to lead the WPI's men's swimming and diving team at the first day of the NEWMAC Championships.  

The 200-yard freestyle relay A team came in seventh, with List, Adam Trumbley (Prospect, CT), Collins and Lybarger clocking in with a 1:27.26 in the finals. Lybarger also picked up points for the Engineers with a 10th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, in a time of 21.49. List was just three spots behind him in 13th-place, coming in with a 21.80 in the finals. 

Both B relays also performed well. Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME), James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY), Victor Puksta (Nashua, NH) and Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) were 13th in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:30.77. Perez-Rogers, Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) and Trumbley placed 11th in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:39.07. 

In the 500-yard freestyle, Carl Curran (Keene, NH) clocked a 4:52.26 in the finals for 15th place, while Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) was the first alternate (17th overall) after posting a 4:50.16 in the morning preliminaries.  Spazzarini was 20th in the 200-yard IM prelims with a time of 2:02.61. 

The NEWMAC men's swimming and diving championships continue on Saturday at MIT with day two of the three-day event.  Preliminaries are at 10am with finals at 6:30pm.
