Cambridge, MA --- Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA) was the top finisher for the Engineers as the WPI's men's swimming and diving team competed on the second day of the NEWMAC Championships. Lybarger came in fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, hitting the wall in 50.65.
Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) led a trio of Engineers in the 400-yard IM, winning the B finals with a time of 4:17.40. Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) was just behind him in tenth at 4:17.59 and Carl Curran (Keene, NH) was in 11th place (4:18.89).
The relay team of James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY), Cullen O'Brien (Ben Harbor, ME), Spazzarini and Ben List (Bedford, MA) finished fifth in the 200-yard medley relay, completing the event in 1:38.65. Coming in seventh in the 800-yard freestyle relay were Lybarger, List, Ben Collins (Newbury, MA) and Curran with a time of 7:06.29 while Spazzarini also teamed with Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY), Victor Puksta (Nashua, NH) and Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) to finish 11th (7:23.84).
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Keith Gagnon (West Hartford, MA) placed 11th with a time of 1:02.11. Two spots behind him in the 13th was O'Brien (1:02.37) and Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA) was 16th (1:02.92). Perez-Rogers, the sole Engineer participating in the night session 100-yard backstroke, finished 13th with a 54.63. Collins posted a time of 1:48.44 in the prelims of the 200-yard freestyle.
The NEWMAC men's swimming and diving championships will continue on Sunday at the MIT campus with the third and final day of the three-day event. Preliminaries are at 10am with finals at 6:30pm.
