Nikolaki Tops in Both Diving Events for Women's Swimming and Diving

Worcester, MA --- For the second consecutive week, freshman diver Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) swept both of her events to highlight host WPI women's swimming and diving's performance at the non-team scoring New England Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Nikolaki turned in first place finishes in the one and three meter diving events with 232.00 and 218.05 points respectively. 

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA), Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA), Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA), and Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) finished fifth in a time of 1:48.14, and the same team swam to an eighth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:56.59). 

Casha posted four top-ten individual finishes for the Crimson and Gray. The sophomore was third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.30), sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.76), seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.92), and tenth in the 100-yard freestyle (58.64). Konieczny finished just ahead of Casha in the 200-yard freestyle (6th place - 2:03.81) and just behind her in the 100-yard breaststroke (7th place - 1:13.88). Kent, WPI's only competitor in the 400-yard individual medley, touched the wall fifth in the event with a time of 4:54.41. 

Casha, Kent, and Konieczny teamed up with Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) to place seventh in the 400-yard medley relay (4:19.26). Peruffo, Casha, and Kent then combined with Allison Indyk (LaGrange, NY) to take home ninth in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:02.85. 

Other top individual finishers for WPI were Kayla Desanty (Holden, MA) in the 1000-yard freestyle (9th place - 12:42.76), Racheal Weinrick (Logan Township, NJ) in one-meter diving (9th place – 95.55 points), and Indyk in the 50-yard breaststroke (9th place – 35.12). Aimee St. Germain (Manchester, NH) was 14th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:58.86), and Kelsey Wall (Marshfield, MA) placed 15th in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.30). 

This meet also featured the rarely seen 25-yard individual events and 100-yard relays. The Crimson and Gray's 100-yard freestyle relay of Casha, Kent, Konieczny, and Lopez sprinted to a third place finish in 48.79 seconds. The 100-yard medley relay of Peruffo, Indyk, Konieczny, and Casha came in seventh with a time of 55.88. Konieczny placed third among women in the mixed 25-yard butterfly (13.46) event.
