Kent Shines as Women's Swimming and Diving Splits Double Dual

Worcester, MA --- The WPI women's swimming and diving squad split a double-dual with Roger Williams and Regis College at the WPI Sports and Recreation Center Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Gray beat Regis 231-52, but lost a close contest to Roger Williams, 158-141. In the third matchup, Roger Williams bested Regis, 230-49. 

Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) led the Engineers with a trio of individual victories. The junior was dominant in the distance events, taking the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.20 and the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:02.01. She capped it off with a win in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.48. 

Senior Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) topped the field in both backstroke events, turning in times of 1:04.49 in the 100-yard race and 2:21.59 200-yard event. Kelin Song (Providence, RI) helped WPI go 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke, taking second place in 1:08.24. She also finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:24.51) and 200-yard individual medley (2:26.42), in which Peruffo picked up fourth (2:28.64). 

Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) also came away with two triumphs, touching first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.83) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.34), in addition to second place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.87). 

On the boards, Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) dove to victory in 3-meter diving with a score or 240.60, and earned third place in 1-meter (225.00). Junior Sam Sargalski (Windsor, CT) competed in her first meet of the year, taking fifth on both boards with scores of 99.93 on 3-meter and 170.48 on 1-meter. 

Peruffo and Casha teamed up with Allison Indyk (LaGrange, NY) and Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) to take second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.63) at the start of the meet. Individually, Briseno brought home two second place finishes, in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.52) and 200-yard butterfly (2:18.63). Indyk was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.19) and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.32). 

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA), Danielle Healy (Cohasset, MA), Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA), and Kent finished second in 3:55.53. Lopez took second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.00) and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.88), while Konieczny hit the wall third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.24) and 200-yard butterfly (2:21.60). Healy grabbed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.31) and 100-yard freestyle (1:03.07). 

Sophomore Aimee St. Germain (Manchester, NH) captured third in the 1000-yard freestyle (12:31.69), while teammate Katie Candiloro (North Adams, MA) took fourth (12:59.58). Candiloro was also fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:10.44). Alexandra Sanz-Guerrero (Ann Arbor, MI) sprinted to fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.37), and freshman Kayla DeSanty (Holden, MA) placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (28.54) and 100-yard butterfly (1:10.34). DeSanty, Candiloro, and Briseno were joined by Emily Colpas (Holden, MA) to take third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:10.34) at the end of the meet. 

WPI's record now stands at 4-3 on the season. Next weekend, the Engineers host the Worcester City Championships, taking on Holy Cross, Clark, and Assumption. The action starts Friday.
