Worcester, MA --- The WPI men's 400-yard medley relay team consisting of sophomores Alex Powers (Glocester, RI) and Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) along with freshmen Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) and Erick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) set a pool record Saturday afternoon at the WPI natatorium inside the Sports & Recreation Center, coming in at 3:36.45 to record the seventh-fastest time in the country this year in a home swimming and diving tri-meet against Babson and Brandeis.
The Engineers (3-0) emerged triumphant on both fronts, topping the Beavers (3-1), 167-122, and the Judges (0-3) by a final tally of 175-83.
Three of the four also helped in WPI's 200-yard freestyle relay, winning in 1:27.96 as Kelleher, Powers and Burgwardt were joined by freshman Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI).
Powers and Burgwardt paced the Engineers as each also won two solo events apiece. Powers took victories in the 100-yard backstroke (53.82) and 200-yard backstroke (1:59.18), while Burgwardt came in first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.22) and 100-yard butterfly (54.00).
Another freshman, Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden) was a double-winner, taking the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.63) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.06). Freshman Matt Puksta (Nashua NH) grabbed a second-place finish for WPI in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.46), while junior Adam McNally (Leominster, MA) did the same in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.49).
The Engineers final two event victories came in the 200-yard butterfly, courtesy of freshman Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY), who had a winning time of 1:59.68, while classmate Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 197.85.
Brandeis had one double winner as sophomore Brian Luk (Hong Kong) claimed the 100-yard freestyle (48.59) and 200-yard freestyle (1:46.45), while junior Max Fabian (Keene, NH) had the Judges only other event win, taking the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:12.12.
Babson had three event wins as senior Isaac Breen-Franklin (Severna Park, MD) came in first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.88), sophomore An Truong (West Roxbury, MA) did the same in the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.82) and junior Domenick Tocci (Brooklyn, NY) won the 3-meter dive (181.40).
The men's swimming and diving team will compete next on Saturday, Nov. 16 in another tri-meet involving Coast Guard and meet host Division I Providence. Babson hosts Norwich and Brandeis entertains Wesleyan on Saturday at 1pm.
