Friday Night Splash - Men's Swimming and Diving Defeats Roger Williams

Bristol, RI --- WPI men's swimming and diving team participated in a rare Friday night dual meet and emerged with a 171-119 road victory over Roger Williams. 

The Engineers (5-1) won 10 events over the Hawks (1-4) and had several notable performances, including freshman Alex Powers (Glocester, RI), who took the 50-yard backstroke (25.72) and 100-yard backstroke (55.15). Powers also swam the opening legs of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:40.18) and the 200-yard freestyle medley as the visitors posted the fastest time (1:29.11). 

Freshman Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) took part in both relays and also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.89) and came in second in the 500-yard freestyle, as senior captain Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) finished in 5:01.89, five seconds faster than Bauer (5:06.64). 

Classmate Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) won two individual events and swam in the 200 medley relay. MacDonald's solo victories came in the 100-yard butterfly (53.56) and 400 individual medley (4:20.68). Erick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) won the 50-yard butterfly (24.85). Burgwardt was also a member of both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. 

Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) secured the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:13.75) for the Engineers and also came in second place in the 400 individual medley as WPI had the top four finishers. 

Another frosh, Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) rounded out the WPI winners, taking the 50-yard breaststroke in 27.70. 

Sophomore Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) had two second-place finishes in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:26.37) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.26). Tristan Petit (Bristol, CT) also finished runner-up twice, taking second in the 50-yard butterfly (24.97) and 100-yard butterfly (55.99). 

Freshman Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) was WPI's top performer in both diving events, taking second in the 1-meter dive (199.20) and 3-meter dive (166.73). 

The men's swimming and diving team will have two weeks off before hosting the two-day WPI Invitational, which starts Saturday, Dec. 7, at 9am.
