Worcester, MA --- Freshman Phineas O'Brien-Milne (Gettysburg, PA) won two individual events to lead the WPI men's swimming and diving team, taking the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.69), and 100-yard backstroke (57.64) as the visiting Crimson and Gray outpaced neighboring Clark to the tune of a lopsided 151-71 final point tally.
WPI's all-freshman 200-yard medley relay team of Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA), Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY), Erick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) and Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) won their event 1:40.12, while Bauer and Kelleher also picked up a solo victories as well – Bauer in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:32.95) and Kelleher in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.79).
Bauer claimed a third victory as part of the WPI 'B' 200-yard freestyle relay team, which up set the WPI 'A' squad with a time of 1:13.45. Senior Ben Collins (Newbury, MA) and sophomore Jonathan Decelle (Rumson, NJ) also swam the relay.
Freshman Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) picked up wins in 1-meter dive (197.25 points), and 3-meter dive (225.65), but was the only competitor in both.
Sophomore Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) won the 100-yard freestyle (49.40) for WPI, while post-grad Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) claimed the 100-yard butterfly (56.05) to round out the slate of WPI event winners.
Burgwardt also took a second-place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.96), while senior Will Grebe (Concord, CA) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.03). Junior Adam Trumbley (Prospect, CT) was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle, with his time of 22.71 finishing just .16 seconds off the lead.
The Engineers are back in the action on Saturday with a makeup meet at Wheaton at 1pm.
