Relays, Nikolaki Shine at Day Two of NEWMAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships

Worcester, MA --- The WPI women's swimming and diving team broke a pair of school records in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay as the Engineers represented strong on Day 2 of the four-day NEWMAC Championships, held at the WPI Sports and Recreation Center. 

The 200 free relay team of Nysa Casha (Andover, MA), Abbegail Nack (Ghent, NY), Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) and Tori Claverie (Derry, NH), the latter three all freshmen, scooped up fourth place in a competitive final, coming in at 1:39.33. 

Later on in the meet, the Engineers' 400 medley relay squadron of Marissa Patterson (Hampton Falls, NY), Casha, Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) and Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) came in fifth place, touching at 4:01.13 for another school mark and delivering WPI another boost to its point total as the meet hosts finished Session 4 in fifth place out of 10 teams with 233 points. 

Sophomore Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) also had a strong showing, coming in fifth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 435.55. 

Senior captain Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) took 10th place in the 500 freestyle in 5:16.09, while Childers was 16th in a time of 5:20.15. 

Martin was tops in the 200 individual medley consolation, coming in at 2:12.47. 

In the 50 freestyle Claverie (27th - 25.60) and Nack (28th - 25.61) were WPI's top performers from the morning preliminaries.

Saturday's action will include the 400 individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard medley relay and men's 1-meter dive. Trials are at 10am and finals are at 6pm.
