Records Fall as Women's Swimming and Diving Finishes Second at Gompei Invitational

Worcester, MA --- Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) set two individual records and aided a pair of winning relay teams, including the record-breaking 800-yard freestyle relay, as the WPI women's swimming and diving team placed second at the three-day, 12-team Gompei Invitational held in the WPI Sports & Recreation Center.

Division II Assumption won the event with 3114 points followed by the Engineers with 2731. Roger Williams finished third (2202.5) while Division II Bentley was fourth (1287) and Mount Holyoke was fifth (1238.5). Division II St. Rose was sixth (1104.5) followed by Smith (818), Clark (744), Marywood (645.5), Brandeis (582), Bridgewater State (564) and Division II Merrimack (85).

Despite finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, Martin set the school record in the events with a 53.17 and 2:12.87, respectively. She also teamed with Emily Matsco (Windham, NH), Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) and Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) to set a new school record with a time of 7:49.32 in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Friday night. The time is unofficially 10th in the country as of Sunday morning.

Day broke 1990 WPI Hall of Fame inductee Anne Kruglewicz's 34-year old 500-yard freestyle record twice on Saturday. She initially clocked a 5:13.46 in the preliminaries and shaved even more time off the standard with a second-place 5:10.12 in the finals. Day also took the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:53.81.

Martin, Day, Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) and Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) combined efforts to claim the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.76). Casha won the 100-yard butterfly (58.60) and reset a pair of her own school records with a second-place 26.32 in the 50-yard butterfly and a fourth-place 1:01.48 in the 100-yard IM. Martin, Day and Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) followed Casha in the 100-yard butterfly in second (59.98), third (1:00.48) and fourth (1:00.87), respectively.

Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) established a new standard on the 3-meter board with a winning score of 466.05. She went on to take second with a 414.00 on the 1-meter board.

Martin was the runner up in the 50-yard freestyle (24.72) and 200-yard butterfly (2:12.87), as was Casha in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28). Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.90) while Childers (1:57.7), Day (1:57.9) and Matsco (1:58.43) were third through fifth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Eggleston, Casha and Martin posted a third place time of 4:08.56 in the 400-yard medley relay as Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH), Eggleston, Casha and Martin were third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:51.32). Matsco, Day, Casha and Martin closed out the weekend with a third place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:39.61).

The Engineers (6-1) welcome Bowdoin on January 10th for a 2pm dual.
