Worcester, MA --- Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) paced the WPI women's swimming & diving team with a pair of victories as the Engineers fell to Bowdoin 148-82 at the Sports & Recreation Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Martin claimed the 100-yard freestyle (55.03) and the 200-yard IM (2:15.43) for the Engineers (6-2) while the trio of Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) and Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) swept the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 1:11.19, 1:13.24 and 1:13.41, respectively. Grant followed Martin in the 200 IM with a third-place time of 2:24.31.
The Engineers received a second-place relay performance from Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Eggleston, Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) and Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) who teamed for a 1:56.54 in the 200-yard medley. Individually, Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.54) and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:21.90). Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) added a second-place time of 2:01.88 in the 200-yard freestyle as Casha came home third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.99) and Bushell was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.37). The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Thea Reymann (Seaside Park, NJ), Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH), Heather Stratica (Northampton, MA) and Danielle Healy (Cohasset, MA) posted a third-place 4:01.09 to close out the competition.
Linnea Patterson (Gloucester Point, VA), Mariah Rawding (White Salmon, WA), Mariah Reading (Bangor, ME) and Sophie Walker (Dumbarton, NH) combined to open the day with a 1:53.60 to claim the 200-yard medley relay for the Polar Bears (2-1). Bridget Killian (Nashville, TN), Walker, Rawding and Teri Faller (North Reading, MA) raced to a 3:43.21 to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Caroline Watt (Essex Falls, NJ) swept the 1,000- and 500-yard freestyle events while the Polar Bears took the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Walker led the way with a 25.15 followed by Lela Garner (Philadelphia, PA) in second (25.83) and Reading in third (26.09). Katherine Kronick (Walnut Creek, CA) took the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.59) as Holly Rudel (Sparta, NJ) claimed the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.82) and Killian touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.80).
Bowdoin's Sage Mikami (Newmarket, NH) and WPI's Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) went head-to-head in both diving events with Mikami taking the 3-meter by a score of 233.10-164.47 and the 1-meter with a 212.24-174.67.
WPI returns to action on Friday to kick off the two-day Worcester City Championships hosted by Division I Holy Cross. The Polar Bears also face an intra-state Division I foe when they head to Maine for a noon dual on Saturday.
