Worcester, MA --- Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) claimed both distance freestyle races as WPI had the fastest time in all 11 swimming events and secured the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM to secure a 123-103 triumph over visiting Bowdoin to remain unbeaten in men's swimming and diving action on Saturday afternoon at the Sports & Recreation Center Pool.
The Engineers improve to 7-0 while the Polar Bears dip to 1-2 on the year.
Houghton clocked a 10:11.04 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and a 5:07.08 in the 500-yard freestyle. James Macfarlane (Ijamsville, MD) was third in the 1,000 (10:26.28) and Adam McNally (Leominster, MA) was third in the 500 (5:07.08). Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI), Ben List (Bedford, MA) and Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) went 1-2-3 in the 50-yard freestyle as Bauer, List and Jonathan Decelle (Rumson, NJ) did the same in the 100-yard freestyle. Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) led the 200-yard IM trio as Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) placed second and McNally came home third.
Alex Powers (Glocester, RI), Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden), David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) and Bauer turned in a 1:36.94 to win the 200-yard medley relay. They were followed by Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA), Kelleher, MacDonald and Burgwardt who posted a third-place 1:40.00. Powers also touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.06) while Petri was the quickest in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.92). Smallwood collected a win with a 52.60 in the 100-yard butterfly and was followed by Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) in third (54.58). Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) also claimed a victory with a 1:47.69 in the 200-yard freestyle.
Tom Kramer (Andover, MA) was a double winner for Bowdoin with a 308.63 on the 3-meter board and a 272.62 on the 1-meter board. WPI's Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) scored a 204.53 on the 3-meter and a 222.90 on the 1-meter.
List, Hughes, Smallwood and Powers were the fastest 400-yard freestyle relay team with a 3:16.03 as Will Hutchinson (Sudbury, MA), Michael Given (Charlottesville, VA), Greg Koziol (Summit, NJ) and Peter Deardorff (Princeton, NJ) collected first place points with a 3:19.77 for the guests. John Lagasse (Hopkinton, MA) was the top point producer in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.82.
The Engineers head to Division I Holy Cross on Friday to kick off the two-day Worcester City Championships. Bowdoin also faces an intra-state Division I foe when the team heads to Maine for a noon dual on Saturday.
