Shenandoah, Texas --- Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) kicked off competition Wednesday for WPI at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships just outside of Houston, Texas. The sophomore finished in 33rd place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.83.
Bauer posted his time in the morning session with the top eight competing tonight in the championships finals and the next eight in the consolation finals. The time of 20.83 just missed the school record time of 20.76. Defending national champion Christian Brindamour of NEWMAC foe Coast Guard registered the third quickest time in the morning (19.94) Austin Fathman of conference rival MIT turned in the 11th fastest time (20.30).
The Engineers also had an entry in the 200-yard medley but were disqualified in the morning session.
Bauer and David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) compete for the Crimson and Gray on day two of the championships on Thursday. Bauer participates in the 200-yard freestyle while Smallwood competes in the 100-yard butterfly.
