Men's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay Just Misses Evening Finals at NCAA Championships

Shenandoah, Texas --- The WPI men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of narrowly missed a spot in Thursday night's finals at the Division III Swimming and Diving Championships near Houston, Texas.

The quartet of Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA), Alex Powers (Glocester, RI), David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) and Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) posted a time of 1:23.93 en route to a 17th place finish in the morning preliminaries.  The foursome is the first alternate for tonight's finals in case a school is unable to compete.

Thursday also featured a pair of individuals competing for the Engineers.  Bauer was the fastest NEWMAC swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle with 26th-place time of 1:40.07 while Smallwood touched the wall in a time of 50.34 to finish 39th in the 100-yard butterfly.

On Friday Hughes, Powers, Smallwood and Bauer team up to compete in the 800-yard freestyle while Smallwood participates in the 200-yard butterfly and Powers takes part in the 100-yard backstroke.
