WORCESTER -- Sophomore Allie Connor (Baldwinsville, NY) and junior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) helped the WPI women's swimming and diving 200-yard medley team get the season started with a victory and each added a pair of individual triumphs as the Engineers narrowly doubled up visiting Division II Bentley, 199-100, Wednesday night. Martin also swam the first leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay squad.
The Engineers touched the wall first and third in the 200-yard medley relay as junior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH), junior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), Connor and Martin struck gold with a time of 1:53.01. They were followed by junior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), sophomore Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA), senior Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) and sophomore Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) with a time of 1:57.64. Connor swept the 50- and 100-yard butterfly with times of 26.84 and 1:02.10 as Martin claimed the 50- (25.22) and 100-yard (54.60) freestyle events.
Junior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) and Patterson came home second (28.16) and third (28.32) in the 50-yard butterfly while Konieczny was the runner up in the 100-yarder with a time of 1:03.96. Childers was also a fraction of a second behind in the 100-yard freestyle (55.48) as junior Sierra Fowler (Bensalem, PA) was third in the 50-yard freestyle (26.91).
Sophomore Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) paced the field in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:46.23 and went on to claim the 500-yard freestyle (5:17.75). Childers and Matsco finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 2:00.04 and 2:00.73 while Patterson secured the 50-yard backstroke (29.19) as Eggleston clocked a 32.89 to claim the 50-yard breaststroke. Freshman Stephanie Marcucci (Dingmans Ferry, PA) and Grant came home second (32.89) and third (33.98) in the 50 breast as Grant (1:12.84), Eggleston (1:12.90) and Marcucci (1:13.76) secured the first three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Bentley freshman Kate Kaduboski (Dedham, MA) took home first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.18) as Patterson was second (1:03.30) and sophomore Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) was third (1:05.31). sophomore Emily Niemiec (Meriden, CT) led a trio of Bentley swimmers to a 1-2-3 showing in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:17.82.
Senior Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) picked up her first win of the season with a score of 260.10 on the 1-meter board and was the runner up on the 3-meter with a score of 252.52. Senior Nicola Mancini (Falmouth. ME) took the 3-meter win for the Falcons (292.27). Martin, Childers, Day and Freud punctuated the victory with a time of 3:46.26 to capture the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Engineers return to action on November 7 as the squad hosts the New England Invitational.
