Day and Nikolaki Deliver as Women's Swimming and Diving Splits Friday Double Dual

PROVIDENCE -- Sophomore Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) contributed to a trio of Engineer victories, including a pair of individual triumphs, and senior Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) swept the diving events as the nationally-ranked WPI women's swimming and diving team edged Coast Guard, 155-144, and fell to host Division I Providence, 195-101, in a single gender double dual Friday night.

The Engineers, ranked 21st in the initial 2015-16 CSCAA coaches' poll, move to 5-1 on the season while Providence improves to 4-3 and Coast Guard slips to 1-4.

Day struck gold in the 800-meter freestyle (9:34.26) and 200-meter butterfly (2:26.02) before teaming with junior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY), sophomore Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) and junior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) to claim the meet-ending 400-meter freestyle relay in a time of 4:07.51. Day also finished third in the 400-meter freestyle (4:37.32). Martin's second-place time of 27.57 in the 50-meter freestyle was .12 shy of the winner from PC.

Nikolaki amassed 260.20 points to take the 1-meter, which was 2.1 points better than her Division I counterpart, and totaled 248.35 to win the 3-meter. Sophomore Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) was third on the 1-meter (212.90) as the Engineers went 1-2-3 in on the 3-meter. Bender was second (209.80) and classmate Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) was third (181.95).  Only WPI and Coast Guard contested both boards.

The 200-meter medley relay team of junior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH), junior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), sophomore Allie Connor (Baldwinsville, NY) and Martin came home fourth (2:08.19) as the foursome of junior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), sophomore Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA), senior Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) and junior Sierra Fowler (Bensalem, PA) followed in fifth (2:11.22).

Childers touched the wall fourth in the 200-meter freestyle (2:12.53) and 100-yard butterfly (1:08.14) as did Grant in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:20.15). Also posting top five efforts were Matsco in the 800-meter freestyle (9:53.99), Martin in the 100-meter freestyle (1:01.53), Bushell in the 200-meter backstroke (2:35.55), Grant in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:56.35) and Jamie Freud in the 200-meter IM (2:35.78).

The Engineers trek to Bowdoin on Saturday, November 21 for a 1pm double dual which will include MIT.
