WORCESTER, MA --- Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) established three school records and tallied WPI's only victory on the weekend as the Engineers placed fourth in the their three-day home Gompei Invitational.
The sophomore broke WPI's two oldest records while winning the 1,650 freestyle (17:23.83) and 1,000 freestyle (10:29.58) and also set a new school standard in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.43).
The Crimson and Gray racked up 2,256 points to finish fourth out of 10 schools as Division II Assumption repeated as meet champion with 2,826.5 points. WPI finished a full 541.5 points ahead of fifth-place Roger Williams University.
Day had several other notable results for the WPI women, finishing third in the 500 freestyle (5:09.07), fifth in the 100 individual medley (1:02.39) and sixth in the 400 individual medley (4:41.65), while also contributing to the relays.
Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) also made her mark with third-place finishes in both the 1-meter dive (402.25 points) and 3-meter (dive) 379.55.
Meanwhile, in the swimming events, Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) provided another top three finish, taking third in the 50 backstroke (28.53), while also coming in fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.07) and 100 butterfly (59.92).
Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) had three top six finishes, coming in fourth in the 50 breaststroke (31.78), sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.43) and sixth in the 100 individual medley (1:02.99).
Allie Connor (Baldwinsville, NY) also took sixth in the 50 butterfly (27.09), while Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) grabbed seventh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.74, followed by Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) in 10th place (2:00.78).
WPI's best finish in the relay events came in the 800 freestyle relay, where a team of Day, Matsco, Childers and Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) finished in third place with a time of 7:50.22. The 'B' team of Heather Stratica (Wappingers Falls, NY), Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ), Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) and Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) also finished eighth (8:09.44).
A foursome of Day, Martin, Reymann and Childers finished fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.30, while the same group also finished eighth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.01).
In the 200 medley relay, Julia Bushell (Windham, NH) , Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), Connor and Martin came in sixth place (1:52.62), while Day, Grant, Childers and Martin finished seventh in the 400 medley relay (4:07.42).
WPI heads to Wesleyan for the Cardinal Duals on Friday night. The final event of the term is set to begin at 6pm.
