WORCESTER – The men's swimming and diving team had the best performer in each event as WPI swept Bridgewater State, 185-92, and Roger Williams, 182-99, on Saturday afternoon at the Sports & Recreation Center Pool.
With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-4 as the Bears slip to 3-6 and Hawks move to 3-4. The Crimson and Gray seniors, the initial class to compete all four years in the Sports & Recreation Center, complete their home dual meet slate with a perfect 21-0 record.
Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden), David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) and Chris Massar (Monroe, CT) opened the meet by taking the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:36.94. The foursome of Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA), Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA), Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) followed with a time of 1:37.81.
Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) led the Engineers in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 10:13.68. James Macfarlane (Ijamsville, MD) was second (10:26.74) and Patrick Lebold (Worcester, PA) was third (10:34.91). Smallwood captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.52) as Gallant was second (1:46.87) and Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was third (1:49.28).
Jack Bauer and Alex Powers (North Scituate, RI) went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 52.53 and 56.35, respectively as Petri (59.56) and Hughes (1:01.69) did the same in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Engineers claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly as Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY), Cam Back (St. Louis, MO) and Houghton turned in a 1:58.62, 1:59.16 and 1:59.86.
Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) swept the 50- and 100-yard freestyle with a 22.00 and 48.96. Massar was the runner up in the 50 (22.87) as Powers and Barrett was second (49.67) and third (49.95) in the 100. Houghton (1:59.40) and Gallant (2:01.96) took the top two places in the 200-yard backstroke while Petri (2:11.62) and Gallant (2:14.12) went 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Hughes, Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) and Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) were the first three finishers in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:55.72, 4:59.95 and 5:07.95. Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) won the 1-meter dive (235.55) and had the best score in the 3-meter dive (229.30). Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) was the runner up in the 1-meter (226.05) and had the second-best score in the 3-meter (195.05).
Smallwood had the best time in the 100-yard butterfly (52.76) as did Jack Bauer in the 200-yard IM (2:00.36) and the team of Hughes, Elsayed, Smallwood and Massar in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.74).
WPI welcomes Clark and Division I Holy Cross to the Sports & Recreation Center next weekend for the two-day Worcester City Championships.
