Nikolaki Repeats as Top Diver at Worcester City Championship Meet

Worcester, MA – Senior captain Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) grabbed WPI women's swimming and diving's only win of the weekend and won the Beth Ferraro Award as the top diver at the Worcester City Championship meet.

Nikolaki struck gold in the 1-meter dive with 456.89 points and also finished second in the 3-meter dive with 399.45 points.

WPI finished third with a team total of 821 points, coming in behind Assumption (1,183) and Holy Cross (907), but finishing ahead of Clark (412). Assumption took home the Callie Taffe team champion trophy, while the Greyhounds' Rachel Ferris won the Cathy Desrosiers Award as the top female swimmer.

Sophomore Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) led the Engineers in the swimming events, coming in second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.79), 500-yard freestyle (5:16.12) and 400-yard individual medley (4:49.27).

Day was a part of the hosts' third-place 800-yard freestyle relay team (8:03.56) along with Eva Childers (Henniker, NH), Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) and Emily Matsco (Windham, NH). Day, Childers and Martin joined Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ) on WPI's third-place 400-yard freestyle team (3:45.91).

Childers was one of the Engineers most versatile performers, also coming in fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (56.32) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.28), and fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.55.

Martin took sixth place in three events, the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.78), 100-yard butterfly (1:02.52) and 100-yard freestyle (56.80).

She was also a member of WPI's fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay (4:12.84) along with Reymann, Day and Childers and Martin joined Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) and Allie Connor (Baldwinsville, NY) on the fourth-place 400-yard medley relay team (4:12.84).

Day, Childers, Eggleston and Bushell combined on WPI's 200-yard medley relay squad, which came in fourth place with a time of 1:56.58.

Bushell had two other top 10 finishes, taking seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.59) and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.69).

Eggleston touched the wall seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.99) and eighth in the eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.01).

Matsco was WPI's top swimmer in the 1,650-yard freestyle (7th, 18:54.01), while Reymann came in ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:39.11.

Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) registered two eighth-place finishes in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:58.10) and 200-yard backstroke (2:20.45).

Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) grabbed seventh place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.97, as did freshman Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.98).

Senior captain Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) claimed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (57.15), while Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) was WPI's top performer in the 50-yard freestyle, coming in 10th with a time of 27.01 seconds.

Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) came in third in the 3-meter dive with 346.50 points and Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) followed in fourth place (345.60).

WPI will resume on Wednesday night with a tri-meet at Wheaton involving the Lyons and UMass-Dartmouth.
