WORCESTER – Junior Ricky Coffin (Pleasant Valley, NY) and sophomore Bryant Babel (Oceanside, NY) totaled five victories as the WPI men's swimming and diving team competed at the Clark Invitational Saturday.
Coffin swept the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 55.03 and 2:03.37. respectively. He also won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:46.34) and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10) for the Engineers. Babel and freshman Hendrick Suwirjo (Derry, NH) were 1-2 in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. Babel, who was second in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:04.44), turned in winning-times of 58.48 and 2:06.50 while Suwirjo followed in 59.49 and 2:10.30.
Junior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) secured the 50-yard freestyle (21.98) to go along with victories by sophomore Shane Bell (Sun Valley, CA) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.87), sophomore Mike Giancola (Southwick, MA) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.73), sophomore Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.67) and freshman Logan Chen (Cambridge, MA) in the 200-yard IM (2:05.31). Bell was second in the 200 breast (2:19.45) and 200 IM (2:06.72). Chen was also second in the 400-yard IM (4:31.44) while freshman Kyle Werra (Taunton, MA) came home fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (54.17). Senior Tom Sullivan (Paxton, MA) also competed for the Crimson and Gray.
The Engineers now focus on the NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships being held this year at MIT on February 18-21.
