Boston, MA --- Junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) and sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) pocketed NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Weekly accolades for their performances at Saturday's Worcester City Championships.
Melanson, the NEWMAC Diver of the Week, Melanson won the 1-meter dive with a score of 239.70 and was the runner up on the 3-meter (230.92). The Whit Griffith Diver of the Meet award came down to Melanson and a Holy Cross diver, who won the 3-meter and was second on the 1-meter. Since they had similar credentials, the decision was made by using their combined scores, which the Crusader won by only 10.51 points.
Bauer, who shared NEWMAC Men's Co-Swimmer of the Week honors with Coast Guard's Chasse Sodemann (Diamond Bar, CA) captured a pair of individual titles and was part of three winning relays as the Engineers swept all of the swimming events. He broke the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke (52.59) and logged a 53.05 in the 100-yard butterfly. The sophomore also swam the first leg of the successful 200-yard medley relay (1:37.06), 400-yard medley relay (3:34.13) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:14.84).
WPI opens its fifth season in the Sports & Recreation Center Friday night with a 7pm set versus Babson and Brandeis. The Engineers enter the season undefeated in dual meet action, at home, since moving into the facility.
