Women’s Swimming & Diving Opens 2016 Home Slate with Trio of Triumphs

WORCESTER – Freshman Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) swept the breaststroke events as the WPI women's swimming & diving team bested Babson, Smith and Brandeis Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center.

The Engineers topped the Beavers 198-91 and Pioneers 172-117 while also outscoring the Judges 174-103. Brandeis defeated Babson 176-95 and Smith 154-135 as the Pioneers handed the Beavers a 198-91 setback.

Edwardson touched the wall first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:10.37 and 2:35.27. Senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) was just under a half second behind in the 100. The 200-yard medley relay kicked the night off with a victory as senior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Eggleston, freshman Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and senior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) raced to a winning time of 1:54.27. Wang went on to claim the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:01.07. Freshman Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) took the 200-yard version in a time of 2:18.91.

Martin added a triumph in the 50-yard freestyle (25.46) while junior Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ) claimed the 100-yard freestyle (56.10) and junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) set the pace in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.41). Martin, Reymann, Day and Wang closed out the meet with the fastest time (1:43.50) in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Senior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.18) and freshman Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) was the runner up in the 200 yard version of the event. Freshman Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) earned silver with a 2:04.56 in the 200-yard freestyle while junior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) handed in a second-place time of 11:20.23 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Junior Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) earned silver on the 3-meter board with 271.45 and bronze on the 1-meter board 236.75 points. Freshman Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) had the third-best time in the 200-yard IM (2:21.95).

The Engineers (3-0) head to RPI tomorrow for a 1pm start. Babson (0-4) travels to Norwich next Saturday for a 1pm double-dual with Regis. Brandeis (2-5) hosts Bentley Friday, November 18 at 6pm. Smith (1-3) entertains Springfield Tuesday at 8pm.
