Troy, NY --- Senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) won all three freestyle sprints as the WPI men's swimming & diving team fell to host RPI 151-148 Saturday at Robison Pool.
Defending Liberty League Champion RPI is now 3-0 while the Crimson and Gray, who were competing for the second time in less than 24 hours, are 2-1.
The meet came down to the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Bauer, junior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) and senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) were .25 off the winning time of 1:27.68. Individually, Bauer won the 50 free in 21.95, the 100 free in 47.83 and the 200 free in 1:44.25.
Sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden), sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Burgwardt began the competition with a winning-time of 1:35.13 in the 200-yard medley relay. Jack Bauer touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (50.50) and 100-yard backstroke (51.85) while classmate Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) earned gold in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.84) and 400-yard IM (4:15.53).
Petri was the runner up in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 59.58 and 2:12.90. Junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) added a pair of second place finishes with a score of 247.40 on the 1-meter board and a 232.30 in the 3-meter dive. Senior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) collected silver for his 2:01.00 in the 100-yard butterfly, and freshman Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:24.92) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.82).
WPI is back in action Friday night with a 5:30pm appointment at Southern Connecticut.
