New Haven, CT --- Members of the fastest 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay teams also accounted for six individual triumphs as the WPI men's swimming & diving team knocked off six-time defending Northeast 10 champion Southern Connecticut State, 161-134, Friday night.
The Owls most recent title was secured at the Sports & Recreation Center earlier this calendar year.
Sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY), sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) kicked off the night with a 3:35.03 to take the 400 MR. Jack Bauer, Perry, Burgwardt and senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) closed out the met with the best time in the 200 FR (1:30.32).
The younger Bauer posted wins in the 100-yard backstroke (53.94) and 100-yard butterfly (52.59) as Kelleher claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (59.24) and Burgwardt struck gold in the 100-yard freestyle (48.96). The elder Bauer, meanwhile, touched the wall first in the 50-yard (22.12) and 200-yard freestyle (1:45.71).
Senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden) was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.59) as was classmate senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.49). Houghton was also third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.45) and sophomore Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) was the quickest in the 200-yard IM (2:01.00).
Rookies Gavin Lee (Bethel, CT) and Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) were second in the 1,000-yard (10:28.72) and 500-yard freestyle (5:00.34), respectively. Junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) picked up bronze in both diving events with scores of 239.85 on the 1-meter and 247.50 on the 3-meter.
WPI (3-1) heads to Coast Guard for a noon meet before returning to campus Saturday.
