New London, CT --- The Bauer brothers continued their dominance and added two pool records to the collection as the WPI men's swimming & diving team closed out the meet with a key win in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a 151-147 triumph at Coast Guard Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) secured the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly in pool record times of 52.34 and 51.37 while senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) took all three sprint freestyles with a 21.82 in the 50, a 47.88 in the 100 and a 1:44.94 in the 200. The duo collaborated with seniors Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) and Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) to punctuate the Engineers team win with a 3:09.11 in the 400 free relay.
The diving pair of senior Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) and junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) each earned gold as Suarez took the 1-meter (244.80) and Melanson claimed the 3-meter with a school-record 255.67. Sophomore Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) also found success with a winning time of 1:58.86 in the 200-yard backstroke and was the runner up in the 200-yard IM (1.58.00)
Jack Bauer, senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden), sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Burgwardt opened the afternoon with a second-place time of 1:36.15 in the 200-yard medley relay. Petri went on to finish second in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.82) and 200-breaststroke (2:11.82), as did freshman Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) in the 500-yard (5:01.49) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:23.44). Senior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) pitched in with a runner up time of 2:00.03 in the 200-yard butterfly.
WPI puts its unblemished Sports & Recreation dual meet streak on the line when it welcomes MIT and Bowdoin Saturday at 1pm.
