Men’s Swimming & Diving’s Pilaar, Ghering and Lee Win Twice at Cougar Invitational

WORCESTER -- Senior Evan Pilaar (Mahwah, NJ), junior Trevor Gehring (Wildwood Crest, NJ) and freshman Gavin Lee (Bethel, CT) each won a pair of events as the WPI men's swimming & diving team completed the regular season at the Cougar Invitational Saturday. The meet included Clark, Wheaton and Davison I Maine.

Pilaar took the 100-yard backstroke (55.58) and 100-yard butterfly (53.46) to go with a seventh-place 23.35 in the 50-yard freestyle. Ghering captured the 200- and 400-yard IM with time of 2:02.51 and 4:29.24, as well as placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.14). He was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that was edged by .09 seconds in a head-to-head matchup with Maine. Lee delivered the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.37) and won the 1,650-yard freestyle in a head-to-head with a time of 17:37.17. Sophomore Hendrick Suwirjo (Derry, NH), freshman Aaron Jo (Tustin, CA), junior Bryant Babel (Oceanside, NY) teamed with Ghering to post a 1:36.19. Freshman Harry Saperstein (Simsbury, CT) also won for the Engineers with a 1:02.35 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Jo was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.64) and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (51.37) as Babel was the runner up in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.53) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (59.99). Saperstein added a third-place time of 1:02.35 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Ricky Coffin (Pleasant Valley, NY) placed second in the 400-yard IM (4:32.07) and 200-yard butterfly (2:02.97), and third in the 100-yard butterfly (54.36). Senior Thomas Hlavenka (Seaford, NY) secured second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.41) and was third in a 1,000-yard freestyle (10:53.90) behind a pair of Black Bears. Junior Mike Giancola (Southwick, MA) took third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.11,

The diving events saw freshman Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) place second on the 3-meter and fourth in the 1-meter while junior Ryan Coran (Potomac, MD) was third on the 1-meter and fourth on the 3-meter.

Next up is the four-day NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships which will be held in the Sports & Recreation Center beginning Thursday, February 16 at 5:30pm.
