WORCESTER – Junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) posted his top 3-meter NEWMAC Championships score to highlight the first evening of the 2017 version of the event which is being held in the Sports & Recreation Center. The 800-yard freestyle relay featured an alternate lineup and came away with a bronze medal.
MIT (135 points) holds a 42 point lead over WPI (92) as Wheaton is third (82), Coast Guard is fourth (78) and Springfield sits fifth (61). Clark (56), meanwhile, has a slight edge over Babson (55).
Melanson totaled 417.30 to finish fourth as compared to his 10th-place 361.05 in 2015. It was also his best placing in three tries. Senior Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) was slightly shy of his personal-best (401.25 - 2015) at the conference meet with a sixth-place 397.65.
Between the diving trials and finals, the 800-yard freestyle relay configuration of junior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), freshman Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA), senior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) and senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) took third in a time of 6:54.19. Kelleher was the only member of the foursome to have prior success in the event as he was the first leg of the 2014 championship quartet.
The B unit also finished third in its race as freshman Matthew Scherrer (Wellesley, MA), sophomore Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), sophomore Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and sophomore Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) handed in a 7:02.92.
The men have the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay tomorrow beginning with the 10am trials. Finals are scheduled to begin at 6pm.
