WORCESTER – Senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden) had a record-breaking day while sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) was named the NEWMAC Men's Co-Swimmer of the Year as the 2017 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships came to a close Sunday night. Petri broke his 200-yard breaststroke mark twice to help WPI finish third as a team.
MIT won its ninth consecutive title with 1,462 points and were joined in the top three by Coast Guard (1,099) and WPI (1,022). Wheaton took fourth (614) followed by Springfield (391), Babson (309) and Clark (221).
Petri clocked a B cut time of 2:03.41 in his morning swim and followed it up with a second-place 2:03.24 in the prime time race. Freshman Dave Chen (East Lyme, CT) was also in the A final and placed fifth (2:05.53). Senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) won the consolation final in a time of 2:06.75 and was followed by sophomore Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) in 13th (2:09.68) and junior Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) in 18th (2:12.22).
Senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) earned silver in the 100-yard freestyle with a B cut time of 45.44. Junior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) and senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) also took part in the championship final and handed in fifth- and eighth-place times of 46.70 and 47.51. The B final saw sophomore Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) touch the wall fifth (47.51) and freshman Matthew Scherrer (Wellesley, MA) finish ninth (48.75). The Bauers, Elsayed and Burgwardt collaborated to deliver a runner up and B cut time of 3:02.73 in the 400-yard freestyle relay while the quartet of Kelleher, Petri, Gallant and Miralda came home third in the B final with a 3:11.41.
Senior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) took fourth in the 200-yard butterfly and achieved a B cut with a time of 1:52.46. Senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) touched the wall first in the consolation with a 1:58.10 as freshman Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) narrowly missed a sub-two minute time with a 2:00.10 to finish 16th.
The 1,650-yard freestyle included freshman Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) and sophomore Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) in the top 10 with fifth- and eighth-place times of 16:40.93 and 16:45.19. Junior James Macfarlane (Ijamsville, MD) and Carley chipped in with the 11th- and 12th place times of 17:23.12 and 17:30.84.
Senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) took fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.93) as freshmen Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) and Josh Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) were second (1:55.67) and third (1:56.28) in the consolation. They were followed by classmate Alex Duffield (Brookfield, CT) in 18th (2:00.96).
The 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships will be conducted March 15-18 at the CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas. Prior to that, qualified divers will head to MIT Friday and Saturday for the NCAA Division III Diving Regional while swimmers await the first round of invites set to be revealed 5pm Wednesday on NCAA.com. The final list is slated for 8pm on Monday, February 27, also on NCAA.com.
