Six WPI Men’s Swimmers Earn Invite to NCAA Division III Championships

Indianapolis, IN --- Sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) along with fellow members of the 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay have earned an invitation to the 2017 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held March 15 – 18 at the CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas.

The NEWMAC champion is slotted eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (49.26) and 12th in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI), senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY) and Jack Bauer are 13th in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:02.73) while Jack Bauer, senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden), senior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) and Andrew Bauer are 14th in the 400-yard medley relay (3:20.21).

Andrew Bauer, who is making his third NCAA championships appearance and second at this particular facility, can also swim in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles while Jack Bauer, who was unable to make last year's trip to North Carolina due to illness, is also eligible to enter the 50-yard freestyle. MacDonald can take part in the 400-yard IM and 200-yard butterfly as Petri can contest the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes.

The Engineers can also compete in the 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relays.

Looking to join them in Texas are juniors Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) and Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA), who are competing for an invite this weekend at the NCAA Diving Regionals hosted by MIT.
