WORCESTER -- Freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) captured the 200-yard butterfly and both distance freestyle events as WPI knocked off RPI 171-129 Saturday in men's swimming and diving action in the Sports & Recreation Center.
The host Engineers improve to 3-0 and snap the visiting Engineers (2-1) dual meet winning-streak at 19 which dates back to 2015.
Shriner won the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.36) for the second time in less than 24 hours and touched the wall first in the 1,000-yard (10:05.75) and 500-yard freestyle (4:54.53). Junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) claimed the 100-yard backstroke (52.70) and freestyle (47.40) for the second time in as many meets and produced a third win via a 51.39 in the 100-yard butterfly. The team of Bauer, sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) posted a 3:29.32 to secure the first win of the afternoon in the 400-yard medley relay.
Chen took the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.40 and the 200-yard version in 2:10.77. Elsayed collaborated with senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland), junior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) to close the meet with the winning time of 3:12.48 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Barrett touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.46) as did Burgwardt in the 50 (21.99).
Sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) and junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) posted runner up times in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.12) and IM (2:01.20), respectively. Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) handed in a second-place score of 251.55 on the 1-meter and a 246.30 on the 3-meter.
WPI hits the road Saturday for a meeting with Division II Southern Connecticut State University.
