New Haven, CT --- Graduate Student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) and sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) each secured a pair of individual events to help lead WPI past Division II Southern Connecticut State University, 157-130, in men's swimming and diving action in Hutchinson Natatorium.
Burgwardt touched the wall first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 21.73 and 47.73, as well as the 100-yard IM (54.48), which was the third of four exhibition events. Chen achieved his success in the 50- (27.62) and 200-yard (2:12.42) breaststrokes. The duo, along with juniors Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) and Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI), earned gold as part of the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:37.67. Bauer went on to take the 50-yard backstroke in 24.41.
Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) accumulated 241.81 points to win the 3-meter dive and totaled 216.53 as the 1-meter runner up for the Engineers. Senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland), sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) and freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) also enjoyed victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.39), 1,650-yard freestyle (17:14.54) and 200-yard butterfly (2:01.34). Sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) chipped in with a second-place 2:01.63 in the 200-yard backstroke.
With the team win in hand, the last four events were exhibitions, highlighted by a 100-yard IM that saw Burgwardt, Bauer, Chen and senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) turn in the fastest times of 54.48, 55.01, 56.17, 57.09, respectively.
The Engineers (4-0) are back in the pool at 11am tomorrow on the U.S. Coast Guard base while the Owls (0-4) are idle until the Gompei Invitational in early December.
