New Haven, CT --- Senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) won three events while sophomore Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) added two more as WPI was upended by Division II Southern Connecticut State University, 159-140, late Saturday afternoon in a women's swimming and diving meet in Hutchinson Natatorium.
The Owls (1-3) pick up their first win of the season and the Engineers move to 4-2 on the year.
Day claimed the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.00) and butterfly (2:13.38), as well as the 500-yard freestyle relay (5:21.89) as Edwardson was the fastest in the 50-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes with times of 32.83 and 2:35.69. She was also third in the 100-yard IM (1:05.07). Sophomore Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.10) and was third in the 50-yard backstroke (29.87). Freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) earned gold in the 50-yard butterfly (27.86), silver in the 50-yard freestyle (26.09) and bronze in the 100-yard freestyle (56.14). Senior Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) accumulated 216.54 to win the 1-meter dive and took second on the 3-meter.
Both relays collaborated for runner up finishes as Seo, Edwardson, Berner and sophomore Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) clocked a 1:55.79 in the 200-yard medley relay and sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT), senior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH), sophomore Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and Day needed only 3:45.02 to complete the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 18:32.05.
WPI remains in the Nutmeg State for an 11am meet at Coast Guard. The Owls return to action when they come to the Gompei Invitational in early December.
