New London, CT --- The WPI 200-yard medley and freestyle relays earned gold despite a 158-140 setback to Coast Guard Sunday morning in a men's swimming and diving dual on the service base.
The Bears improve to 3-0 and the Engineers dip to 4-1 on the young season.
Junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) collaborated to win the opening medley race with a time of 1:34.90. Burgwardt, senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), junior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Perry close out the meet with a winning time of 1:26.24 in the freestyle.
Bauer went on to claim victories in the 100-yard backstroke (51.38), 100-yard freestyle (48.30) and 100-yard butterfly (52.10). Chen, meanwhile, took second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.22) and third in the 100-yard version of the event (59.38), and Burgwardt chipped in with a runner up 21.54 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) achieved an NCAA cut for the first time this season with a winning total of 276.67 on the 1-meter board. He then placed second on the 3-meter with a 269.85. Freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) was second in both distance freestyles with a time of 4:54.85 in the 500 and a 10:13.60 in the 1,000 to go with a third place showing in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.27). Junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) added second-place times in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.44) and 200-yard IM (1:59.29). Senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) handed in a third-place time of 1:47.25 in the 200-yard freestyle.
