Cambridge, MA --- The WPI women's swimming and diving team picked up four third place victories in a tough double dual with MIT and Bowdoin Saturday. The host Engineers defeated the Crimson and Gray 239-55 and the Polar Bears won 183.50-78.50. MIT is tied for eighth and Bowdoin is receiving votes in the most recent CSCAA Top 25.
Senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) earned bronze with a time of 5:22.46 as did sophomores Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) and Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) in the 100[yard breaststroke (1:11.38) and 100-yard backstroke (1:02.80), respectively. Freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) also touched the wall third with a time of 55.05 in the 100-yard freestyle. Day was also fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.57) as Seo was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.43) and seventh in the 200-yard IM (2:19.24). Berner collected a pair of sixth-place finishes with a 25.72 in the 50-yard freestyle and a 1:01.41 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Day teamed with sophomores Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT), Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) to take fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.88). The 200-yard medley relay that featured Seo, Edwardson, Morgan and Berner came home fifth in a time of 1:54.73.
Freshman Daire Daly (Sharon, MA) finished fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:37.45) while sophomore Mackenzie Karnilaw (Houston, TX) was fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.68). Sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) added a sixth-place time of 2:03.52 in the 200-yard freestyle. On the diving board, senior Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) was seventh on the 3-meter and eighth on the 1-meter.
WPI is idle until the three-day Gompei Invitational beginning on December 1st.
