Westwood, MA --- Six members of the WPI men's swimming & diving team have garnered weekly awards from the NEWMAC. Sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) was tabbed as the swimmer of the week while senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) was named the diver of the week. The 400-yard freestyle foursome of junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), freshman Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA), junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) was feted as the relay team of the week.
Chen delivered the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.56 before securing the 200 in a time of 2:10.00. He was also second in the 50 (26.98) in a meet that saw the Engineers defeat Wesleyan and come up just shy of edging No. 12 Williams.
Melanson was the top diver with a season-best 278.00 on the 1-meter board and was third on the 3-meter (255.35) as the Engineers defeated Wesleyan, was edged by No. 12 Williams and fell to No. 11 Tufts on Saturday.
The 400-yard freestyle relay handed in a time of 3:10.47 to take third in a winner-take-all race versus No. 12 Williams, which was decided by two points or .03 seconds in the Ephs favor.
Men's Swimming & Diving returns to action at 6:30pm on January 17 with a road meet at Wheaton with UMass Dartmouth.
