Oneonta, NY --- Graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY), senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA), junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) and sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) each collected a pair of individual victories as the WPI men's swimming & diving team defeated host Hartwick, 175-109, Saturday in the Sally Griffiths Herbert '88 Aquatics Center.
The Engineers complete the 2017-18 dual meet campaign with a 10-4 record. It is the sixth consecutive season the men have boasted a record of .500 or better and the fourth straight season the team has logged 10 wins or more. The Class of 2018, which becomes the only group in program history to boast double-digit wins in all four years, wraps up dual meet competition with a 42-11 ledger. Head Coach Paul Bennett, meanwhile, owns 103 men's victories and 178 overall.
After collaborating with Bauer, freshman Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) and junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) to take the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.97, Burgwardt claimed the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 21.35 and 47.36, respectively. Melanson was once again the top diver in both events with a 1-meter score of 255.20 and a 3-meter total of 262.30. Bauer took the 100-yard backstroke in 51.62 and the 200 back in 1:56.17. Zimmermann was successful with a time of 4:55.91 in the 500-yard freestyle and 10:16.49 in the 1,000 free.
Also earning gold were sophomore Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.16) and senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) in the 200-yard freesyle (1:49.77). Perry had the quickest 100-yard butterfly (52.44) and teamed with Burgwardt, senior Chris Massar (Monroe, CT) and Bauer to hand in the fastest 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.04). Denbow added second-place times of 1:01.48 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:16.83 in the 200. Junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) handed in the second-best time in the 200-yard IM (1:58.84).
The Crimson and Gray host the second annual Tech Sprints Saturday. Sessions begin at 10am and 4:30pm.
