Shriner, Barrett, McDonald & Zimmermann Highlight NEWMAC Swim Dive Opening Session

Cambridge, MA --- The WPI men's swimming & diving 800-yard freestyle relay earned All-Conference second team honors with a runner up performance on the first night of the 2018 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships at MIT.

Freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA), senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland), freshman Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA) & sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) teamed up to clock a 6:52.77 to take second in the event. In the B final, junior Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX), sophomore Matthew Scherrer (Wellesley, MA) and junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) delivered a 7:04.26 to take third in the heat.

Senior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH), junior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY), sophomore Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) and senior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) began the night with a 7:55.05, which was good for third in the women's B final. The foursome of senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA), sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA), sophomore Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) and sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) followed up with a 7:51.08 to claim fifth for the Engineers.

Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) placed seventh on the 1-meter diving board with a score of 413.20 and freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) took the 100-yard freestyle record from current assistant coach Emily Martin with a 53.04 in a time trial.

Friday features the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay prelims (10am) and finals (6pm). The women's 3-meter dive prelims are at 1:15 and finals are prior to the 400 medley relay.
