Women’s Swimming & Diving Third in Season-Opening Worcester City Championships

WORCESTER – Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) was the runner up and one of three student-athletes to swim faster than the 50-yard freestyle meet record as the WPI women's swimming & diving team took third at the two-day Worcester City Championships which was held in the Sports & Recreation Center.

Holy Cross won the Callie Taffe trophy for the first time since 2012, snapping Assumption's six-year reign. It is also the Crusaders 12th title in 18 meets dating back to 2002. Kayleigh Hoagland and Casey Sherman swept the Cathy Desrosiers (Clark '82) and Beth Ferarro (Clark '88) swimmer and diver of the meet accolades for the Division I program.

Pawlak handed in a time of 24.71 in the 50 free and took third in the 100-yard freestyle (55.91).

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Pawlak, Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) and Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) was third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.10) while the 200-yard medley relay team of Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA), Morgan and Pawlak was also third (1;53.18). Berner, Morgan, Pawlak and Monika Nowak (Longmeadow, MA) secured third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:46.83) as Seo, Sykes, Berner and Pawlak were fifth in the medley version (4:10.61) of the event.

The foursome of Sykes, Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY), Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) and Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY) turned in a third-place 8:19.65 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Individually, Sykes was second in the 400-yard IM (4:43.39), and third in the 200-yard IM (2:13.84) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.63).

Leigh Whitehorn (Madison, NJ) was the runner up with a 342.46 in the 1-meter dive, followed by Deanna Kay (Tyngsboro, MA) and Julia Noël (Beverly, MA). The 3-meter saw Noel take second (347.99), Whitehorn finish third and Kay place fourth.

Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) earned bronze in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.48) and secure fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.40). Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) added a third-place time of 1:11.42 in the 100-yard breaststroke while Gonya was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.21) and fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:12.09). Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) came home fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, and Seo was sixth in both the 100-yard (1:03.26) and 200-yard (2:17.48) backstrokes.

WPI entertains Babson, Smith, Brandeis and Simmons on Friday.
