Men’s Swimming & Diving Earns Seventh Consecutive Worcester City Championship

WORCESTER – Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) was named the Justin Ferris (WPI) Swimmer of the Meet as the Engineers retained the Worcester City Championship following the two-day event held in the Sports & Recreation Center.

The Engineers totaled 1,167 points to hoist the Paul Parenteau trophy for the seventh meet in-a-row, and the 13th time in 18 meets dating back to 2002. Holy Cross was second with 822 and Clark was third with 567. Clark's Rowan Moody took home the Whit Griffith (WPI Coach '82-'02) Diver of the Meet honors. All event winners also earn All-City accolades.

Chen was part of four wins, featuring two individual meet records and two more as part of a relay. The 400-yard medley relay, that also included Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland), closed out the Friday night session with a time of 3:27.94. He then took the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.35 on Saturday morning. In the final session, Chen teamed with Bauer, Perry and Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) to secure the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.13) and went on to win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.76). Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) was the runner up in both breaststrokes while the B and C relays were second and third in the 400 medley.

Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) was one of three Engineers to swim faster than the 1,000-yard freestyle meet record with a winning time of 10:18.88. He was followed by Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA), the former record holder, Matthew Olson (Honolulu, HI) and Henry Buda (Laurel, MD). Shriner (4:59.32) and Zimmermann were also 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Miralda, Perry, Barrett and Bauer also set a meet record with a 1:27.22. The 800-yard freestyle relay consisting of Barrett, Donald Buglino (Titusville, NJ), Shriner and Zimmermann kicked off the event with a first-place 7:14.54 and the 400-yard freestyle relay comprised of Sid Williams (Irvine, CA), Bauer, Barrett and Miralda closed out the meet with a winning-time of 3:14.02.

Miralda (1:49.61), Shriner and Williams were the top three in the 200-yard freestyle as Miralda (22.15), Chen, Barrett and Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) took the first four spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) touched the wall first in the 200-yard IM (2:00.73) and 400-yard IM (4:23.10). Denbow and Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) were the runners up, respectively.

Bauer collected both backstrokes with a 52.62 in the 100 and a 1:58.76 in the 200. Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Peter Fagerholm (Sandy Hook, CT) and Jehu De la Rosa (Mission, TX) were second and third in the longer race. Barrett added a win in the 100-yard freestyle (48.59) and was followed by Bauer, Miralda and Williams.

Perry was second in the butterfly events with a 2:00.98 in the 200 and a 51.44 in the 100. He was followed by Buda and McCarthy, and Besch and Gallant, respectively. Tom Lipkin (Mont Vernon, NH) represented the Engineers in the diving events.

WPI hosts Babson and Brandeis Friday at 6:30pm.
