Westwood, MA --- WPI junior Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) was named as the NEWMAC Men's Swimmer of the Week while he and his 400-yard medley relay teammates, Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland), were lauded as the NEWMAC Men's Swimming Relay of the Week for their performances at the Worcester City Championships. Springfield's Valmore Stewart was selected as the conference diver of the week.
Chen was part of four wins and meet records en route to Justin Ferris (WPI) Swimmer of the Meet honors. The 400 medley relay closed out the Friday night session with a time of 3:27.94. Chen then took the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.35 on Saturday morning. In the final session, Chen teamed with Bauer, Perry and Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) to secure the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.13), and went on to win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.76). He also was second in the 50-yard freestyle, and a member of the second-place 200-yard freestyle and third-place 400-yard freestyle relays.
Individually, Bauer swept the backstrokes with a time of 52.62 in the 100 and 1:58.76 in the 200 while Chen set a pair of meet records with a 58.35 in the 100-yard breaststroke and a 2:09.76 in the 200-yard version of the event. Perry was the runner up in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterflies with times of 51.44 and 2:00.98, respectively. Barrett won the 100-yard freestyle (48.59).
As a team, the WPI men won the city title for the seventh consecutive year and secured the program's 13th crown in 18 meets.
The Engineers host Babson and Brandeis Friday night at 6:30pm.
