WORCESTER – Freshman Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) posted the quickest times in a pair of events to help WPI collect wins over Simmons (165-135), Brandeis (197-96), Smith (241-59) and Babson (241-48) in the first dual meets of the season Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center.
The Sharks defeated the Judges (159.5-134.5), Pioneers (212.5-87.5) and Beavers (232-61) while the Judges bested the Pioneers (203.5-92.5) and Beavers (201-69), and Smith downed the Beavers (187-100).
Sykes was the first of three Engineers to touch the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.72. Sophomore Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) and junior Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) were .04 seconds apart in second (1:11.88) and third (1:11.92). Later in the meet, Sykes had the fastest 400-yard IM performance with a 4:42.14. Junior Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), Sykes, junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) opened the night with a 1:53.02 in the 200-yard medley relay.
Seo was the winner in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.46) as was Pawlak in the 50-yard freestyle (24.93). The fastest 200-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), Pawlak, junior Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) and Morgan posted a time of 1:42.42.
Edwardson was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.81) and Seo was the runner up in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.39). Junior Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) took second in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.33) and 1,000-yard freestyle (11:07.59). Berner claimed second in the 100-yard freestyle (56.24) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.66).
Also earning silver were freshmen Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.70) and Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.55). Sophomore diver Julia Noël (Beverly, MA) was second in the 3-meter with a score of 175.75 and fourth in the 1-meter (177.80).
The Engineers entertain Coast Guard and Southern Connecticut on Saturday, November 10 at noon.
